The new central library in Artesia, New Mexico replaces the outdated facility that served this city of 12,000 people for almost fifty years. Our team provided complete programming and schematic design services for the new building, and led a unique collaboration between private donors and the city. RoehrSchmitt lent extensive library experience to this collaboration with Jose Zelaya Architectos, and together we've created an iconic building that dramatically engages the distinctive landscape of southeastern New Mexico. The beautiful new Artesia Central Library meets the modern needs of the community now, and well into the future.

The building is also the new home and refuge for a large pastoral mural by native son Peter Hurd – protégé of N.C. Wyeth – that was salvaged, restored and transported from Houston, Texas. The 25' x 60' mural now presides over the reading room and is framed by a dramatic curtain wall facing Main Street.
