A new place to gather for a far-flung family of four on seven rocky acres of pine and birch high upon the bluff over Lake Superior. Three-levels comprise 1,500 square feet of main floor with two bedrooms and a great room area with floor-to-ceiling windows opening out to broad, unobstructed vistas of the lake. The lower garden level is 350 square feet of walkout studio nested in the hillside, one wall of glass framing the lake through the trees.
A stair tower at the main entry connects these two levels to a crow’s nest aerie from which to hear the treetops moving and feel the breeze coming off the lake. The tower serves as a chimney for convective venting and cooling of the entire house, as well as a retreat. While thoroughly modern inside and out, the massing and exterior materials evoke a northern maritime vernacular.
